- Feature wall or fireplace surround: Natural stone or marble, sealed before grouting, for a higher-end look in a lower-moisture area.
Why Waterproofing Matters More Than the Tile Itself
Cement board is water-resistant, not waterproof — moisture can pass through it into the wall framing behind it unless a proper membrane is installed. Large-Format Tile: What to Know Before You Choose It
Large-format tile (we use the term for tile with at least one edge over 15") creates a clean, modern look with fewer grout lines, but ANSI A108.02 requires a much flatter substrate for it than for standard tile: no more than 1/8" variation over 10 feet. Older subfloors almost never meet this without self-leveling underlayment first. Skipping this step is the most common reason large-format tile ends up rocking, cracking, or showing visible lippage.
